At 6:30 a.m. the air was crisp, and as Steve Gang of Manchester and Chris Leghorn of Beverly rode their tandem bicycle along a deserted country road in Hamilton, Gang described the mist rising off a passing field.
Leghorn could tell they were in an open space because the light was stronger, but the mist was indistinguishable from the "whitish-yellow thick fog" through which she sees the world. It's like staring through frosted glass.
Leghorn began losing her vision in her early 20s. Now, at 53, the rare degenerative disease called retinitis pigmentosa has started to take its toll.
She doesn't like to think she'll go completely blind; she is hopeful that advances in stem cell research will lead scientists to a cure. But it doesn't change the fact that she feels a part of her is undergoing a long, slow death.
