Seven cars of a Norfolk Southern train derailed Wednesday afternoon, and state officials say the railroad didn't notify them.

According to Don McInnon, director of Emergency Management for Jones County, it happened on U.S. 11 about 3 p.m.

The seven derailed train cars were empty, McInnon said. They were hauling drilling mud, he said.

"There was no hazardous materials, no crossings were blocked; there were no injuries and no fatalities," he said.

McInnon said he didn't know the cause, but investigators were on the scene Wednesday night assessing the situation.

McInnon said he didn't learn about the derailment until 6 p.m.

"The media alerted us about the derailment, (and) that doesn't sit well with me," he said. "Somebody is going to have to explain to local officials how this happened and make sure it doesn't happen again."

Railroads, by law, are required to notify the state of Mississippi about any and all derailments, McInnon said.
