When the first Earth Day was held on April 22, 1970 — brainchild of Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson — it inspired people from around the world to undertake initiatives, both large and small, in the service of environmental sustainability and the preservation of the planet. In Princeton on that day, a group of residents from different professions and walks of life got to talking about how they could, in their own local way, create something which would serve the community as well as uphold the "reduce and reuse" ideas promoted on Earth Day. They decided to create an organization that would both sustain people, by selling healthy organic foods and other staples utilizing local resources, and sustain the earth, by encouraging recycling, conservation and sustainable stewardship of farms, residences, businesses and everything in-between.
