NATCHEZ — Natchez residents are almost done dodging orange barrels on Seargent S. Prentiss Drive, as workers put the finishing touches on the bridge over Liberty Road.

The Mississippi Department of Transportation project began in the fall of 2005. The $18.5 million structure replaces two aging bridges.

“It is about 90 percent finished," MDOT Project Engineer Nellie Wimberly said Friday. “This week, we opened traffic under the bridge, so current traffic patterns are the same as the final traffic pattern will be."

Contractors still have to install lighting, finish an irrigation system and complete some final roadwork, she said.

“We're still not through with paving," she said. “One more layer of asphalt will go over the whole project, from the traffic signal at the high school up to McLaurin (Elementary School) and under the bridge on Liberty Road."

That work will mean some lane closures, but the bridge's end result should be beautiful, Wimberly said.
